Crumpdate: Settling In

Crumpet has quickly bonded with her people.  She started sleeping in bed with them right away.

She is still not sure of Tyson, the other cat.  He really wants to be her friend, but if he gets to close she hisses and he leaves her alone.  They will sleep in the same bed together though!
We are hoping that, with time, they will be friends.

Crumpdate!

Over Labor Day weekend, Crumpet went home with a wonderful couple and their cat, Tyson.  Tyson was picked up as a stray, neutered, and taken in as a pet.  He was not the nicest kittie when they first found him, but they loved him and he grew to love them too.  They knew it could take some time.  They saw Crumpet online and were moved by her biography so they came out to meet her and they took her home the same day.  As long as Crumpet and Tyson get along, Crumpet will have a home for life and so far so good.

She is bonding very quickly with the people and slept in bed with them last night.  Her and Tyson have been doing well too.  They sniffed under a door for the first day but since then they have been out with each other.  Crumpet does hiss when he comes too close, but he understands and walks away.  Crumpet always takes a little bit of time to adjust to new kitties.  She has to develop trust with them before she cuddles with them.  Can you blame her?!  The couple understands this and is happy with how well things are going so far.

We are really excited for her and hopeful that this will be her last stop, that she will have found her forever family.

Crumpet Flyer--Help us hang them up!

Could you help us help Crumpet by hanging up flyers in local coffees shops, independent pet stores, at your job?  Anywhere people will see her.  If so, contact Laura at lmckelvey@pawsatlanta.org, and I will send you the document!

Crumpet's Spa Day

Yesterday, we trimmed Crumpet's nails.  She needed it!  I will not lie.  She did not enjoy it, but it had to be done.  We spent the rest of the day spoiling her and letting her know everything would be okay.  We gave Crumpet her favorite Temptations Seafood flavored treats!

And we, of course, gave her lots of physical comfort, chin scratches, and pets.

This morning we gave her a nice new bed to curl up in and her regular breakfast.  She was no longer worried about the shortness of her nails and seemed glad to see her people.  She really craves attention, and there is no way she can get enough of it at the shelter, but we try to give her as much as possible.

If you or someone you know might be willing to foster or adopt Crumpet please contact Laura at lmckelvey@pawsatlanta.org

Crumpy Kitty

This morning Crumpet was a little cranky (we call it crumpy--cute and grumpy) when it came time to clean her cage.  Life in a shelter can be a little insecure and daunting so we really cannot blame her.  She got scared and gave me a little scratch when I moved her to her newly cleaned cage.  I gave her some time to adjust and came back about thirty minutes later, and she was as sweet as pie again.

Some cats have more cattitude than others and Crumpet is an independent girl with a lot of personality.  We will not deny that.  She loves to be scratched and pet, but she only wants to be picked up for short periods of time.  We know she is even sweeter and more affectionate in a home because we have seen her.  We wish someone would give her a chance.

Last week, a cat named Cali (was Trixie)--who was far more upset and shutdown than Crumpet has ever been--went home with the wonderful volunteer that had been working with her.  Only a week later, he is posting happy stories on our Facebook about her playing chase with him and being a wonderful pet.

You can already see the difference in body language.  It is huge!  In the top picture she was in the shelter and had been here just a few weeks.  Her ears were pinned back in anger.  Now, she is home with him and her ears are perked up in play and with interest.

Now, Crumpet is not like Trixie, but I think it is important to recognize that when looking for a cat to adopt, just because one is hanging back, is shy, or bats at you does not mean that cat is a bad kitty.  It just means that they are unsure of their constantly changing surroundings and could benefit greatly from settling in with a good, trustworthy, understanding person.

Because Crumpet has been at the shelter so long, we are willing to try something different with her.  If you really think you would like to adopt her, but you are not absolutely sure she will fit in your home you could foster her with the intent of adopting.  If she did not work out in your home, we could find her another one, but you would still be able to help her by offering her a more relaxing and calm environment in the meantime.  Contact Laura at lmckelvey@pawsatlanta.org for details.

Crumpet Moves to the Lobby

In hopes of giving Crumpet more visibility we have moved her into the front lobby.  She cannot hang out with her kitty friends up there, but everyone who comes into the shelter sees her.  We are trying to make her comfortable in her new digs.  For awhile, she had this awesome, donated, scratching post.  She was very curious about this and thought it smelled quite interesting. She eventually lost interest, and we moved it out so she would have more room to do her favorite thing.

Crumpet's Story

Almost two years ago  Crumpet was found as a stray and brought to PAWS Atlanta.  Everyone on staff had a bottle baby at home, and we had no idea what we could do with one more.  Without constant care and nourishment, that baby would not survive.  Luckily, two volunteers visiting from the UK just happened to be in the lobby on their first day of volunteering.  They heard the staff members struggle and, without knowing a thing about cats, stepped up to the plate.  The offered to foster her until we had room for her.

She regained her strength and then some.  She was a little spitfire, always getting into things and getting into trouble.  You had to watch her like a hawk in those early days.  She had no fear and no sense of danger.
She still doesn't, I suppose, but she has mellowed out A LOT.  She just likes to sleep on various beds and in the rays of sunlight that shine through a window.  She curls up next to other cats and enjoys head and neck scratches.

Crumpet finally was old enough to be spayed and neutered.  Then she was able to go up for adoption.  She went to PAWS and, soon after, her foster parents went back to the UK.  She began waiting for her perfect home and, unfortunately, she is still waiting almost two years after she first showed up.  Black cats do not get adopted as quickly as other cats.  Crumpet was also scared in her new environment and would shy away from people or bat them away.  Everyone looked past her to the younger, less serious kittens.

What the people did not realize was that Crumpet was highly intelligent, hilarious, and so much fun to be around.  She just needed a little time to get comfortable with her new setting.  She can now be found in our main lobby (we wanted her to be seen more often) lounging on a comfy bed and rubbing up against the metal bars in hopes you will give her a pet.  She still does not love to be held for longer than ten minutes, but she is all about being scratched.  She will burrow her head straight into your hand and plead with those beautiful green eyes for affection.  She is still sensitive to change, but she is a cat and she is okay with that if you are.

I hope you will take the time to come out to the shelter and meet this beautiful, little girl.  You will not be sorry you did.  If you have any questions please e-mail Laura at lmckelvey@pawsatlanta.org.  And, if you cannot adopt, please share her blog with your friends and family!
