This morning Crumpet was a little cranky (we call it crumpy--cute and grumpy) when it came time to clean her cage. Life in a shelter can be a little insecure and daunting so we really cannot blame her. She got scared and gave me a little scratch when I moved her to her newly cleaned cage. I gave her some time to adjust and came back about thirty minutes later, and she was as sweet as pie again.
Some cats have more cattitude than others and Crumpet is an independent girl with a lot of personality. We will not deny that. She loves to be scratched and pet, but she only wants to be picked up for short periods of time. We know she is even sweeter and more affectionate in a home because we have seen her. We wish someone would give her a chance.
Last week, a cat named Cali (was Trixie)--who was far more upset and shutdown than Crumpet has ever been--went home with the wonderful volunteer that had been working with her. Only a week later, he is posting happy stories on our Facebook about her playing chase with him and being a wonderful pet.
You can already see the difference in body language. It is huge! In the top picture she was in the shelter and had been here just a few weeks. Her ears were pinned back in anger. Now, she is home with him and her ears are perked up in play and with interest.
Now, Crumpet is not like Trixie, but I think it is important to recognize that when looking for a cat to adopt, just because one is hanging back, is shy, or bats at you does not mean that cat is a bad kitty. It just means that they are unsure of their constantly changing surroundings and could benefit greatly from settling in with a good, trustworthy, understanding person.
Because Crumpet has been at the shelter so long, we are willing to try something different with her. If you really think you would like to adopt her, but you are not absolutely sure she will fit in your home you could foster her with the intent of adopting. If she did not work out in your home, we could find her another one, but you would still be able to help her by offering her a more relaxing and calm environment in the meantime.
